Every home project starts with an idea and any DIY enthusiast can testify that it is satisfying to complete any home project. The easiest way to update an existing space on a budget is with a new coat of paint. Whether it be to update wrought iron patio furniture or a sofa, metal furniture can be repainted.

Choosing the colour for your furniture depends on personal taste and preferences along with the surrounding items within the room. All principles of choosing colours are the same when choosing furniture colours. For interiors, in spaces that are small with minimal amounts of natural light, whites and pastel colours such as Berger Smooth Flow, Penta Silver Sand, or Sissons Crystal White are best. For larger spaces receiving ample amounts of light, pieces can be painted in darker colours like Penta Pacific Blue, Berger 7509 Emerald Accent or Berger 7501 Deep Turquoise. These can be used as focal pieces when paired with a pastel or neutral interior. In the case of garden furniture, colours chosen can either complement or contrast with exterior features such as gardens and exterior walls.

Preparation is key in renewing any old furniture. Some may require more work than others but all situations can be handled like a professional if the correct steps are followed.

Steps:

  1. Wire brush or sand the furniture to remove any loose or flaking pieces of old paint or coating.
  2. Clean the surface to make sure all small particles are removed, and the surface is clean and smooth.
  3. Apply a coat of metal primer.
  4. Apply 1st application of topcoat and let dry before applying the second coat.

For rusting furniture, rust should be removed with a rust remover or wire brush before the above steps can be done. The above list is a general guide. See instructions on paint can label for precise directions. Once these steps are followed your metal furniture will look like new!
