When painting a space one very important factor to consider is its size. The size of a room combined with lighting can influence how a colour appears. Don’t be limited by its area but be inspired by the creativity that can be expressed with colour. A small space can be transformed with the right colours and contents.

Pastel shades like  Berger 7923 Summer Sprinkle, Berger 7993 Melon Sorbet or Berger 8017 Peach Carnation make small spaces appear bigger while darker colours like Penta Rough Seas or Berger Regatta make small spaces appear smaller.

A clean white such as Berger White, Berger Through the Blinds, or Sissons Apple White paired with ceiling to floor curtains can give the illusion of height. Adjacent or nearby rooms should carry the same or similar hues to encourage continuity. Ceilings and internal trims can be painted in the same or lighter shade to the walls.

Adding a vertical focal point by painting vertical stripes on a wall can give the illusion or height, while the addition of a horizontal focal point gives the illusion of width.

When introducing accent walls to small spaces, the contrast between very light and dark shades such as Sissons Crystal White and Penta Rough Seas or Penta Silver Sand and Berger Oxford Grey can give the illusion of a bigger space. This can also be created with the introduction of painted furniture in deep navy blues such as Sissons Regatta or Berger Regatta, or brightly coloured accent pieces. The finish and sheen level also plays a very important role when choosing the right colours. A semi-gloss or satin finish paint is recommended as the reflection of light by these finishes also makes a space feel bigger.
