The first step is getting your cabinets ready for the new look! Here are some simple steps to help you transform a major part of your kitchen.

Tools needed:

  • Sandpaper
  • Berger Royale Gloss or Satin
  • Berger Wood Primer Undercoat
  • Painters’ tape
  • 2 pieces of Cloth (dry & wet)
  • Paintbrush or Roller

Steps:

  1. Remove the doors and/or draws in your cabinets. Wipe all surfaces with an all-purpose cleaner or lightly soapy water, to ensure all grease and other debris are removed.
  2. Tape off areas around the cabinet that touch your wall, that is above, below and to the sides. You should also cover all areas below your cabinets with an old sheet or fabric of your choice to prevent mess and make for easy cleanup.
  3. Using Medium-fine grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge, sand the entire surface in the direction of the grain, until you can see under the top layer of finish or paint.
  4. For previously painted Cabinets, if the paint is in good condition it can be covered. If not, old paint should be removed before sanding.
  5. After sanding, you can use a dry brush to dust off the excess shavings from each door and the cabinet framework.
  6. Apply ONE coat of Wood Primer Undercoat to each door/drawer and framework. Apply primer in the same direction of the grain, using nice even strokes to apply a thin layer.
  7. Apply paint colour of choice in brands Berger Royale gloss or Royale Satin. Drying time for each paint is stated on the label. Remember to allow at least 1 hour drying time between coats (if a second coat is necessary) to ensure not to smudge layers.
