SURFACE PREPARATION
NEW AND UNPAINTED: Ensure that surfaces are dry and cleaned free of all dirt, dust, grease, oil, wax, form oils, parting compounds, fungal and algal growths and other debris and contaminants.
CONCRETE FLOORS: New concrete floors must be allowed 6-8 weeks to thoroughly cure and dry-out before painting, otherwise softening and breakdown (saponification) of the paint film will occur. Ground level floors in direct contact with the soil must be effectively damp-proofed, otherwise blistering and breakdown of the paint film will occur. Check for damp or wet spots. Check moisture content with a moisture meter. Alternatively tape 30 x 30 cm squares of polythene sheet (100 microns thick minimum) to the floor at various locations and examine after 24 hours. If beads of water show on underside of sheet, the floor is too damp for painting. Level any surface projections by grinding, stoning or scraping. Remove any oil, grease, dirt and dust.
WOOD: New wood must be cured, dry and cleaned free of any dirt, oil, grease, exuded resin, soluble salts arising from preservative treatment etc. Fill all cracks, holes, crevices, etc. with an appropriate wood putty or filler.vOil-based wood putties and fillers should be used on primed wood only.
IRON AND STEEL: Remove rust and millscale by handtool cleaning (SSPC-SP2-82) or power tool cleaning to Swedish Standard ST-2. Remove oil, grease etc. by solvent cleaning with Penta Thinner 41 to SSPC-SP1-82.
