SURFACE PREPARATION
NEW WOOD: Ensure that the wood is properly cured and the surface is dry and cleaned free of all dirt, dust, grease, oil, wax, fungus/algae, resin, preservative salts and other debris and contaminants, which may affect adhesion, drying, protective properties, or appearance of the coated surfaces.

SOLVENT CLEANING: Oil, grease and wax can normally be removed by using Penta Thinner 41 and changing wiping
cloths often to ensure removal. Some woods, such as Teak, are very oily and to ensure proper drying, the oil must be removed by wiping thoroughly several times with Thinner 41 or Lacquer Thinner, and then preferably sealing with Penta N.C. Sanding Sealer. Fill all holes, cracks, splits and crevices with an appropriate wood putty or filler. Oil-based putties or fillers should be used over wood, sealed first with 1 coat of Penta P.U. Varnish Glossy. Sand the surface with the grain only. Use a medium grit paper at first, and progress to finer paper as the wood becomes smooth. Dust or vacuum completely. The surface may be dampened again to raise the grain. If this is done, the wood must be sanded again when dry

PREVIOUSLY VARNISHED: Remove all loose, semi-adherent, peeling, blistering and cracking varnish, dirt, dust, grease, oil, wax, fungus, algae and other contaminants, and sand to obtain a smooth sound surface, as even as possible in appearance. Alternatively, for best results completely strip and sand all surfaces to bare wood. In any case if varnish is easily removed by scraping, or if more than 25% is removed then it should be completely removed by scraping and sanding, stripping with Penta Paint Stripper, or by means of a hot air blower. Fill all surface defects as for new surfaces. Rub down glossy surfaces to ensure good adhesion.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES: Will also have to be completely stripped off.
NB: When using Paint Stripper, apply it liberally and spread it around with a brush. Allow the old surface to blister (20- 30 minutes but do not allow the stripper to dry on). Use a scraper tool or putty knife to remove the residue. Furniture with several coats of finish may require several applications of Penta Paint Stripper to reach bare wood. Remove any residues with steel wool dipped in water, rinsing frequently. Wipe the entire surface with a clean dry cloth. Allow to dry completely, solvent clean with Thinner 41 or Thinner 792 (Lacquer Thinner) to remove residual wax from the stripper, with frequent changes of wiping cloth. Finally sand. Treatment of Fungus Infected Areas: Treat fungus/algae infected areas with a solution of 1 part household bleach in 3 parts water. Rinse off thoroughly with clean water. allowing. NB: Observe manufacturers precautions for using household bleach. Wear protective goggles, rubber gloves, boots and clothing to protect eyes and skin from splashes. The alkalinity of the bleach may cause discoloration of new wood. Check first on test area.
